Undergraduate studies culminate in the creation of a senior thesis exhibition at the University's Sweeney Art Gallery, a practice unique to UCR among all undergraduate art programs in the UC system.
The Department's sculpture, video, computer, and photography laboratories have state-of-the-art equipment. The Sweeney Art Gallery hosts exhibitions of historical and contemporary importance as well as the work of students. The California Museum of Photography, located in downtown Riverside, has one of the largest and most complete collections of photography in America. It includes photographic apparatus, books and images spanning photography's entire history.
Art majors receive priority consideration for internships at both the Sweeney Gallery and the California Museum of Photography. Aspiring artists coming into the Art Department can submit samples of their work for the Chancellor's Performance Award. Recipients of the award receive up to $2,500. Other departmental grants and awards are available from the Art Department.
The University Honors Program offers lower-division courses taught by distinguished faculty and introduces undergraduates to the challenges and rewards of scholarship and research from the beginning of their undergraduate careers. In the upper division, the program invites outstanding students to design and produce honors theses and projects under individual faculty supervision. Through the departmental Honors Program, highly qualified students are invited to conduct a research thesis of their own initiative and design in collaboration with a faculty member. Participation in the Honors Program is the capstone of an excellent education.
Through the Education Abroad Program, UCR students can add an international perspective to their education by studying and living in another country while earning UC credit.
A faculty member serves as an advisor, assisting students in developing the best program to meet individual needs and interests.
